Various contracts in remote areas with predominantly Indigenous peoples. Responsible for primaryhealth care, assessment and treatment of outpatient, emergency presentations, Ambulance call outsand chronic/acute mental health patients. As well as continuing care of acute patients on ward whenin a hospital. Any critically ill medical and mental health patients are transferred via Royal FlyingDoctors Service. Casual Remote Area Nurse working in the Kimberley in Western Australia. Responsible for Chronic Disease management and acute emergencies. Working with a host of primary health care providers and emergency service. Often working in isolation with minimal support to provide the best health outcomes for the community.

Six continuing care bed and two acute bed rural facility with outpatients/emergency and three day a week GP service.Continuing Care and Acute CareResponsible for Hospital Level age care. Assessment, planning and implementation of all cares as well as the care and management of the acute beds when they are occupied.OutpatientsThere is a GP in the facility only 3 days a week 0830hrs – 1700hrs Monday, Wednesday andThursday and on call overnight from 1700 Tuesday to 0900hrs Wednesday and 1700hrs Wednesdayto 0900hrs Thursday. During those times there is a GP working or on call, the RN on duty assiststhe GP as required. Taking bloods, assessing and triaging emergency walk ins, wound assessment and basic suturing. Those times there is no GP available the RN on duty liaises with a GP service inregional centre and regional hospital ED, assessing the patient and faxing through the assessment.During morning shifts Monday to Friday there is an RN on duty for the facility as well as thedistrict nurse, the facility manager who is an RN and two nurses aids. Between 1700hrs and 0830hrs weekdays and 1700hrs Friday to 0800hrs Monday there is only one RN on duty with a nurse’s aid and a RN on call for emergencies.PRIME/Rural Emergency Nurse (REN)The RN’s also participate in an on call roster when not rostered on duty in the facility.This means that the RN on call carries an ambulance pager and is to be no more than 20minutes from the hospital. The RN responds to recalls by the hospital and to Priority 1and 2 calls by the ambulance service as a PRIME practitioner.

Medical WardTwenty-six bed acute medical ward, due to the population demographic the majority ofelderly. During my time here I have had the opportunity further my understanding ofcommunity services and the role they play when discharging patients home or to RestHome placements. This consists of talking with patients taking part in multidisciplinarymeetings, contacting family and significant others, liaising with medical officers inorder to coordinating the best outcome for patients. While here I have also steppedinto the role of preceptor having a 3rd year nursing student for four weeks.

Aged CareEighty two bed hospital level aged care facility, I worked as RN in charge supervising andensuring all cares for residents were carried out. Assessing residents and liaising withMedical Officers as required ensuring best possible care for all residents.
