In 1949 I started a life of adventure by working my passage to Canada and hitchhiked around for a while. A student and graduate apprenticeship at Rolls Royce was followed by a period in aero-engineering in Canada. Back at R-R in Britain I became a Development Engineer on the first By-Pass engine (fan-jet). Following this period on the Conway I worked on the Avon Reheat System bringing that to Scotland to open the new engineering facility at Hamilton. This was followed by responsibility for Helicopter engines based on the Napier Gazelle My background in Aero-engine development took me to Aden, the Gulf and Malaysia during the Indonesian Confrontation to experience the use of helicopter engines in jungle and naval warfare. Following promotion to Plant Management with responsibility for all support departments I attended a Senior Management Course in preparation for the next promotion. However I became restless and left to start my own business in electronics and built Prestwick Circuits from employing 3 to 600 in 15 years. During this time I was on the Council of the CBI in Scotland ending up as Vice Chairman. I was also on the Executive Committee of the Scottish Council (Development and Industry). I was the founder of the UK Printed Circuit Federation and was its chairman . I was also a director and finally Chairman of the US based trade association the IPC. In 1987 I was a founding investor and Director of Highland Express, the Scottish long haul airline. And in 1990 I was a founding investor and Director in the Prestwick Airport buy-out from BAA. In addition I was founding investor and director of WestSound Radio in AYR in 1979. From 1993 I was a Director of Sheldahl Inc., Minneapolis and from 1995 a director of SIDRABE in Riga, Latvia. I retired from business in 2007. Since then I have focused on Church and Community issues.
