CrossEPC is a small process engineering consultancy that has serviced the engineering industry for many years, especially in the Oil & Gas sector.My role has been that of Process engineer on a project aimed at making hydrocarbons from syngas in a modular plant. The first part of this project was working together with clients that already produce syngas and are interested in an additional income stream. The second part was working on site with the test rig (pilot plant) in order to fully prove the technology. Although there are still some difficulties that need to be ironed out, the tests have been successful so far.

Statistically sound methodology ensure the required information is generated with known confidence limits.Within LBM the expertise of thickener operation is not only based on theory, but also on extensive practical thickener control and observation from the control room. The combination of knowledge and experience enable the quick and correct identification of the root cause in challenging thickener applications.The application of electrokinetic technology could mitigate some of the environmental aspects highlighted through the EIA. LBM has knowledge and experience in this field.

As a Senior Process Engineer almost all my time has been devoted to the Kpone Independant Power Project. The Kpone Independent Power Project is a 340MW combined cycle power station being built on the coast near Accra in Ghana. The plant was designed with two turbines that could run off either natural gas or light crude oil. The gas from the turbine exhausts would be used to produce steam that would power a steam turbine. Cooling for the steam turbine was via a once-through sea water cooling systemI was appointed as the lead process engineer for the EPC company (Group Five) and was responsible for overseeing the process engineering design work that was being done by the engineering sub-contractor (Worley Parsons) and various specialised equipment vendors. This entailed reviewing all process design documentation, making sure other disciplines were informed and integrated in design changes and maintaining the tight schedule as far as possible. I was also responsible for giving technical support for the procurement team (including technical input to contracts) and the site team when difficulties were encountered on site.I also assisted with overseeing the instrumentation and control portion of the project, focusing on the review and implementation of the control narratives as well as assisting with specifying and procuring of the instrumentation. The balance of the instrumentation and control portion of the project was handled by the Lead Electrical Engineer with whom I worked closely together.From the end of May 2017 until November I was on site full-time, assisting with the completion of the construction and the plant commissioning phases.

During this period I worked mainly on two power projects, more recently the Kuvaninga Power Project and before that the Namakwa Sands Co-generation Power Project.The Kuvaninga Power Project was a project in which natural gas would be used to power 10 gas engines to produce around 40MW of energy. The plant was built in Mozambique.I was responsible for managing the process design submitted by the sub-contracting engineers. This entailed making sure all process related integration was correctly done both between the different engineering disciplines and between different specialised vendor packages on the plant.The Namakwa Sands Co-generation Power Project was a project in which furnace off-gas was used to power 8 gas engines to produce around 16MW of power to be fed back into the smelter’s internal grid. This was built at the Tonox Namakwa Sands Smelter near Saldanha in the Western Cape.

Worked as a process engineer within in the Energy division of the company. Majour project experience included a wet ash handling project for Sasol in Secunda, and the formulation of a comprehensive functional description for the EPC portion of a thermal power station extension project in Zimbabwe. Duties included performing hydraulic calculations, doing mass balances and high level site layout and being responsible for the water systems in the thermal power plant design.

Worked as a process engineer in the nuclear industry, both on the PBMR project and on the existing HTF Test Facility. Petrochemical experience during this time included the FT Wax Expansion Project at Sasolburg. A combined petrochem and solids handling project made use of a parrafinic additive to charcoal for producing braai briquettes.
