The Coalition is committed to making career development/readiness the central focus in American education. Our Advisory Board currently includes more than three dozen of the nation's most prominent education, business and government organizations. In April, 2019, we released our White Paper, "Career Readiness for All," at the US Capitol. We are currently planning the second annual National Career Development Summit, which will be held in Washington DC in January, 2020. The Global Pathways Institute works to help lead a national movement to prepare far more young people to lead successful lives as adults. Our belief is that providing young people with high-quality multiple pathways is the best way to prepare them for economic independence. To advance this goal, we are working nationally, regionally and in Arizona. Nationally, we helped form the Coalition for Career Development (see separate description). Regionally, we hold the annual Western Pathways Conference to showcase the best work being done to create more effective, efficient and equitable career pathway systems. The 2019 Western Pathways Conference was held in Portland, Oregon and hosted by Governor Kate Brown. The 2020 Western Pathways Conference will be held in Kansas City, Missouri, June 10-12. Learn all about it at www.westernpathways.com In Arizona, we have been involved in several efforts to provide high-quality career development and worked with the Arizona State Board of Education to help develop a new measure of college and career readiness for inclusion n the State's A-F report card for schools.

Primary organizer of the "Creating Pathways to Prosperity Conference," held at Harvard University in March, 2013. The conference attracted 450 people from 42 states and 4 foreign countries, and featured more than 100 prominent speakers, who were leaders from business, education, government and the non-profit sector. Primary author of the Project's 2012 report, "Pathways to Prosperity: Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Young Americans for the 21st Century."

I researched and spoke about the role of business in education reform. I also organized two major conferences on this issue for the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College.

During my career at BusinessWeek, I led bureaus in Pittsburgh, Boston, Toronto and Rome, Italy, and served as a senior correspondent based in Denver. I produced several dozen award-winning cover stories on everything from major corporations and CEOs to major league baseball and the Catholic Church to education and religion. Beginning in the late 90s, I became BusinessWeek's chief education correspondent, and wrote widely about the role of business in education reform.
