I have practiced law for more than 43 years in Denver, Colorado. In the spring of 2019 I retired from my position as a partner at Ryley Carlock & Applewhite, and since that time I have continued to work on a number of legal matters while at the same time leveraging my experience to help develop a number of tools that can be used by fiduciaries. In December of 2020 I co-founded The Private Trust Consortium, which is a membership organization dedicated to providing individual trustees with the information and tools they need to successfully manage private trusts. During my legal career I have been lead counsel in numerous cases tried in state and federal courts throughout the country – mostly disputes involving will contests, the administration of trusts and estates, and the collection of estate and income taxes. Many of these cases were high profile cases that were featured on nationally televised newscasts such as “60 Minutes” and were covered by national news publications such as the New York Times, Washington Post and Newsweek. I also argued cases in several different federal Circuit Courts of Appeal, the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Colorado Supreme Court.In addition to my representation of clients in trial and appellate courts, I assisted many clients in the creation and implementation of their estate and business succession plans. This work included the ownership and management of a multi-family family office (MFO), negotiation of prenuptial/postnuptial agreements, and involvement with blended families, second marriages, non-traditional family arrangements and more.
