Engineering Compute Infrastructure
CurrentTechnology Infrastructure at Bloomberg manages tens of thousands both virtual and physical machines. We are focused on delivering a software defined infrastructure to provide an agile and efficient solution for our developers. This reduces manual effort and risk of human error, while improving our ability to get new capabilities to our customers quickly. Our team currently operates a scaled private Cloud based on several key technologies including as OpenStack, VMWare, Ceph and Kubernetes on a commodity-focused multivendor hardware platform. We deeply integrate our offerings into Bloomberg's overall development platform. Cloud Compute alleviates many of the time-consuming tasks our engineers historically faced in order to get their software deployed and usable for our customers. We also define, test, and maintain a set of compute platform standards for all of Bloomberg. This requires that the team understand hardware at a low level to ensure each configuration satisfies our performance and reliability objectives. With new CPUs from AMD, Oracle, IBM and Intel all arriving in 2017, we have been busy evaluating equipment to enable us to select our 2018 platform components. The compute platform also leverages software and continuous integration to execute performance testing, which allows fact-based performance comparisons between vendors and versions.
