The HSUS is the world’s largest animal protection organization. While HSUS runs a few wildlife and horse sanctuaries on the West Coast and East Coast, their focus is on national campaigns to end dogfighting, stop the Canadian seal slaughter, end horse slaughter, and end factory farming. HSUS fights big agribusiness and other corporate interests in lobbying for animal protection bills at the national and state levels. This was the best job ever. I was doing good in the world, and the job still offered a pension after 30 years of work! Sadly, the regional offices closed January 2009.· Wrote letters to constituents in response to calls or letters about pending legislation· Responded to all constituent inquiries that came in by phone and e-mail from our nine-state region· Researched wildlife issues regarding pending wildlife legislation in our region and prepared reports briefing our regional director· Tracked legislation in states in which we did not have a state director· Prepared and submitted the regional director’s monthly credit card expense report and check requests to Accounting· Performed IT work in the office to keep our network running· Made travel arrangements for the regional director· Went above my job description by cutting expenses in our office by $300 dollars a month by negotiating our contracts.
