The Emerson National Hunger Fellowship is a selective leadership development program that trains, inspires, and sustains a network of leaders committed to social justice. The Emerson program bridges community-based efforts with national public policy to develop Hunger Fellows as effective leaders in the movement end hunger and poverty. Fellows are placed for the first six months with community-based organizations all over the country involved in fighting hunger at the local level, such as grass roots organizing groups, food banks, economic development agencies, local advocacy groups, and direct service providers. Fellows then move to Washington, D.C. to complete the year with national nonprofit organizations and federal government agencies to develop, implement, and advocate for policies that address hunger and its root causes, including racism. Through this unique program, the Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellows Program develops effective leaders with a deep understanding of hunger, poverty, and racism at both the local and national level that enables them to find innovative solutions and create the political will to end hunger.

I worked on the Race, Equity, and Leadership team. I wrote profiles of cities implementing progressive racial equity policies, analyzed and mapped data of racial disparities throughout the U.S., and developed models for sharing key data with city leaders.

I conducted qualitative research to capture community stories around history of food access, culture, and agriculture within Ward 7 D.C. I also examined aggregation methods with farmers in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in order to facilitate the movement of farmers of color into the D.C. wholesaling market. My edification was captured in my Hunger Free Community Report, "Urban Agriculture as Activism: A Guide for Community Organizers," a guidebook that details how community residents can turn urban agriculture spaces into hubs for community organizing. Using the Dreaming Out Loud Garden and Dix Street Garden in DC as case studies, the guide explains how food sovereignty principles are tools for community empowerment.

Learning for Justice seeks to uphold the mission of the Southern Poverty Law Center: to be a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements and advance the human rights of all people. I worked on the Editorial team, managing web content for learningforjustice.org and email marketing system, Oracle Eloqua. I wrote articles for Learning for Justice magazine, and analyzed and communicated the results of our digital efforts, influencing strategy that resulted in 50% Facebook page growth and 65% Twitter growth over a 12-month period.
