In the Growth Activation team I’m responsible for working on our established B2B app to ensure it delivers value to customers. Working in an agile team we’re making use of split testing to rapidly iterate to improve the onboarding experience and ease of use of the platform for all customers but with a particular focus on those on lower paid or free plans to improve profitability of these segments.

In Archives Technology + Services, we were creating a cloud hybrid archive and play a key role in the workflow of programme creators — from programme delivery, media movement & storage, and output to iPlayer or playout for TV broadcast.I was responsible for creating several software systems using event-driven microservice architectures to allow petabytes of media to be moved, exported and used by BBC staff and external users. We also created the BBC’s first dedicated system to handle IMF (Interoperable Master Format) packages which are used in UHD programmes and a metadata ingestion pipeline.I spent my first 3 years as part of Voice + AI primarily creating our very own virtual assistant, Beeb, and creating conversational interfaces for platforms like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. My work here resulted in me playing a small part at Microsoft Build 2020. I was invited to create a Developer Story video which involved 2 full days of filming with a production company.I worked with product and delivery managers, UX and editorial staff to plan, develop, and deliver our projects as part of a distributed multi-disciplinary agile team. I took part in department initiatives such as Engineering Champions which defines our paved road tooling, processes and best practices as well as taking part in engineering and architecture forums.

My role was to help with the development of their new website by working with the marketing team and 3rd party design agency. I used my experience to optimise performance. I was able to drastically cut page weight and improve load times. Despite offering more features, JS and CSS payloads were each roughly halved and overall page weight dropped from 80-96% on the three most important page types.The new site launched with great success. We saw a 32% increase in goal completion (such as registering, booking an appointment, or making an enquiry) on desktop and a 51% increase in goal completion on mobile, which was particularly targeted as an important metric due to the continuing growth of mobile customers and visitors.

I was a full stack web developer at this busy agency with a wide range of clients. Our bespoke solutions often featured 3rd party integrations such as courier services and payment processors. I led a team of developers, supporting and directing them in their work. I collaborated with designers, project managers, company directors, and clients daily to architect, develop and test our solutions and would provide training to clients.As a senior member of the team, I used my experience to improve our workflow by introducing new tools, processes, and documentation. I created documentation and resources to aid the on-boarding of new developers. Coaching and mentoring other colleagues was a big part of my daily role. I enjoy seeing other people learn and develop their skills and confidence.I was also responsible for the continued development and maintenance of in-house tooling — from bug fixes, refactoring & maintenance, to new features. This included creating new flexible components to solve common problems that we faced across our projects to ensure a coherent approach, streamline development, cut time to delivery and ease maintenance.
