About Wim Vanraes
I am one of those people who left home and family for the sake of love. My wife is American, so to the US I traveled. It wasn't easy to start up again, with all the networks I had cultivated through family life, high school and university work left overseas, forcing me to start from square one again. This steep learning curve helped me understand my new country better, and get a new and different appreciation for it.My life's journey brought me quickly to anything language related. Translating, proofreading, and later copy-writing and blogging, helped me to now start teaching History (as an archaeologist by training, a lifelong passion) and (Ancient) Literature and Writing in a private High School. Freelance work as a columnist and news writer help balance out my interests, allowing me to apply my analytical skills learned as an archaeologist.Some stints working on a brewery (right idea, wrong time), and almost a year as Editor-In-Chief for the Gazette van Detroit, an English/Dutch language newspaper for multi-generational Flemish and Belgian immigrants to the US, helped broaden my horizon to a deeper connection with other people, culture, and leadership/management.This experience really honed my skills, in particular research and writing. I find myself gravitating to the intersection between culture, history and politics, where I like to look for the broader 'streams' and influences, to see not just where and why events happened, but also catch a glimpse of where they are headed.
