Short CV: Full Professor and founding Director of the Institute for Computational Mechanics at the Technical University of Munich. Born near Salzburg (Austria), studied at the University of Innsbruck and received PhD from the University of Stuttgart. Among others acted as founding director of the Munich School of Engineering and am co-founder of the companies AdCo EngineeringGW and Ebenbuild GmbH. Received several esteemed awards and serve on a large number of prestigious boards. Currently also serve as Rector of the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine (Italy) and am member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences as well as of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.Science: Research interests can be described as “application motivated fundamental research” in a broad range of areas in computational mechanics, with applications spanning all fields of engineering and the applied sciences - i.e. "translational research at it's best". With a strong basis in a variety of advanced single field problems (like computational solid/structural, fluid and transport dynamics), the current focus lies on coupled multifield and multiscale problems (like fluid-structure interaction, contact dynamics, thermo-structure interaction, electro-chemo-mechano-thermo interaction, opto-acoustics, porous media, multiphase transport, etc.) as well as on computational biophysics (on sub-cellular and cellular scale) and especially biomedical engineering (like modelling of respiratory and cardiovascular systems, cancer growth, etc.). In recent years, we also put a strong emphasis on inverse analysis, uncertainty quantification and machine learning. In all these areas we cover the full spectrum from advanced modeling and the development of novel computational methods to sophisticated software development and application-oriented simulations on high performance computing systems. In the biomedical engineering field our ambition is to cover the whole spectrum from basic science to clinical applications, i.e. "from bench to bedside". In collaboration with leading researchers worldwide as well as national and international industrial partners, we expedite projects at the front line of research.
