Senior Network Security Engineer

Current

Waltham, Ma, Us

Aug 2022 - Present

Senior Network & Devops Engineer

New York, Us

Started as a Senior Network Engineer; the company consolidated the systems and network business units into DevOps with a common goal of automating everything. We managed networks and shared resources between multiple cloud providers and remote offices, utilizing Git, BitBucket and Terraform automated processes. I also managed core shared technologies such as Elastifile, Commvault, Atlassian and Hashicorp products utilizing the same methodologies. One of my initial projects was to refresh and document the remote access infrastructure. During the process I eliminated over ten years of technical debt. Perfect timing as the global pandemic took off, shortly after. But having metrics and logging in place; we quickly scaled capacity, per region to optimize costs. Working closely with IT, we managed to get everyone remote without issue. We completed a migration of our resources into AWS and GCP, from the remaining data centers. Most applications were easy to migrate, a few required cross functional projects and teamwork. Being data center free, allowed us to focus on automation and cost optimization (FinOps).I set requirements and planning for acquisition and remote office infrastructure improvements and integration. Working closely with local engineers, we’d modify or redesign the infrastructure based on a templated approach.

Jul 2019 - May 2022

Senior Systems & Network Engineer

Westminster, Colorado, Us

I redesigned the internal and external infrastructures, during a migration to a new office and data center. The design allowed engineers more automated tooling and quicker deployments to develop and test the composable infrastructure product. During the redesign: I deployed OpenStack and Ansible, allowing for easier setup and management of production and QA environments. Updated production, QA and dev infrastructure to 10G/40G/100G using Arista, Juniper, Cisco, Mellanox, Edge-Core, and Brocade equipment. Introduced and reconfigured a number of systems and applications eliminating expenses and stepping up security. Documented and diagrammed all the configurations, procedures and troubleshooting steps involved. An executive requirement was to have a publicly available environment to demo the company’s product. I led a project to completion, working closely with front-end and back-end developers to implement a secure virtual product. Having a web based product to quickly demo, significantly expanded the sales team’s game.I enjoy engaging with the people and products anywhere I work. As I had done in the past, at Crosswalk, I worked closely with the architects and developers to drive enterprise network and security requirements and guidelines for the product. Doing so increased the POC and customer base.I trained and managed new team members, as the company grew. During the redesign, I delegated applications and tasks that pushed their knowledge and career growth.

Oct 2017 - Jul 2019

Founder & Primary Consultant

Kontactjabber

I enjoy working with people and wanted to get to know the community; as well as bring my enterprise expertise to small businesses. I’ve had various contracts to design and implement secure LAN/WLAN and WAN solutions meeting the client’s needs. One of the more challenging contracts was to migrate from a VPS/Cloud provider to a local data center, given a consolidation of the business. Cost optimization was at the forefront of every decision; heavily leveraging open source solutions for SCM, CI/CD, collaborative and back office applications. Other contracts included: helping achieve and maintain governmental, PCI, and HIPAA compliance; infrastructure redesign and deployment with minimal downtime; implement collaborative applications between multiple healthcare offices; redesign numerous non-profit infrastructures. Throughout all the work, I maintained extensive documentation, diagrams, and runbooks for all projects.

Nov 2008 - Oct 2017

Senior Network Engineer

New York, Ny, Us

I was brought in from Pronto, post-acquisition, to integrate the systems and applications into highly available data centers. I worked closely with different business units to establish requirements and workflows to complete the transition with minimal downtime. Also managed egress/ingress traffic (BGP, IS-IS, OSPF), firewalls, load balancers and back office apps. Before there was an InfoSec business unit, I recognized the need to refresh a largely neglected security infrastructure. So I took on the project to redeploy BeyondTrust (we had an active contract) and start automated scanning and report generation. This really helped the company get a better understanding of where they were exposed. Prior to the contract expiring, I POC’d all the large commercial offerings. We settled on and globally deployed Qualys across our data centers and AWS environment. A couple of acquisition audits and integrations: One based in AWS, architected HA connectivity under tight deadlines with minimal notice. Another was an Eastern European company’s office and data center; requiring the soft skills to understand cultural differences in communication and work.

Mar 2013 - Sep 2017

Lead Operations Engineer

New York, Ny, Us

I led projects to migrate and upgrade networks and systems; as well as managed egress/ingress traffic throughout multiple data centers. Leveraging my troubleshooting skills, combined with debugging, packet captures and stack traces; I worked with business units to solve complex application and connectivity issues. Documenting and diagramming everything along the way; including runbooks and setup guides.Pronto was a shopping comparison site, under IAC. It was imperative to maintain PCI compliance, as well as execute security policies handed down by corporate. Outside of the normal audits, I managed and maintained an open source IDS/IPS infrastructure.I had to provide quick deployments and migrations during corporate restructuring, office moves and a natural disaster (Hurricane Sandy). The business wanted to expand into Japan; working closely with the engineering manager, we found a suitable VPS provider, then I set out to come up with cost effective solutions for connectivity and deployment. Before the company was purchased we rolled out Puppet, for configuration management across all our systems; then began focusing more on automation.

Jul 2010 - Apr 2013

Network Security Engineer

San Jose, Ca, Us

I was part of a global team managing and securing ingress/egress traffic, in architecturally complex environments (EBay & PayPal), utilizing highly available Nokia IPSO/Checkpoint and PIX/ASA firewalls. We were constantly updating and innovating the environment; as well as providing support to an achieved goal of 99.9999% uptime. Another large portion of my workflow involved configuring and managing a mixed IDS/IPS/DDOS mitigation environment using commercial, open source and proprietary solutions. We also managed the global RSA MFA and SSL infrastructures.

Oct 2006 - Nov 2008

Network/Security/Systems Administrator

Us

I secured and optimized the company’s infrastructure. Then saw a need to introduce enterprise requirements for networking and securing the product, a RedHat clustered, dynamic storage solution; so began dialogue with the architect and developers. To ease the burden of reimaging clusters and provide developers more freedom, I developed automated deployment tooling utilizing RHEL’s kickstart and PXE boot. Once mastering the product, I spent time with developers troubleshooting/debugging their proprietary code across the stack and providing escalated field support for installation engineers. This position was also my first foray in managing and training other team members, as well as writing custom tools to install, administer and troubleshoot using a combination of Tcl and bash scripting.

Jul 2005 - Oct 2006

Network & Security Administrator

Amsterdam, Nl

I transferred to the IT department from being an analyst, prior to Chicago Title being purchased by ABN AMRO. After working in systems support for a couple months, I recognized a need to reduce costs and improve security. So I set out to teach myself networking and security, while administering a Unix, Linux and Microsoft environment. Shortly thereafter, I was performing network and systems audits to meet SEC & SOX guidelines; deploying websense (web filtering); redeploying BGP and OSPF for high availability; and documenting and diagramming everything. Around January 2003, I moved to Colorado and worked remotely for the remaining two years; eventually replacing my replacements.

Aug 1999 - Jul 2005

Equity Analyst

Jacksonville, Fl, Us

For the last two years at DePaul, I worked full-time at Chicago Title and went to school at night. I worked closely with senior analysts to research and recommend stocks to the mutual funds and high net-worth portfolios. I leaned into technology automating custom-templated spreadsheets tied to proprietary databases. I also provided backup to the equity trader, working closely with sell-side brokers.
