I was brought in as the Founding Executive Director of the Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy and Environment (ISCE2) from September 2022 to September 2023. My role was aimed at transforming the institute to support Singapore’s sustainability goals, including the Singapore Green Plan and Zero Waste Masterplan, through strong partnerships with academia, public agencies, and industry.ISCE2 aims to help industries transition to renewable carbon and green chemistry, accelerated by digitalization and automation in three focus areas:Decarbonisation, which focuses on reducing carbon dioxide emissions through conversion to fuels, chemicals, construction materials, etc.;Green materials, including the development of environmentally friendly products which are biodegradable and circular materials which can be recycled and upcycled;Green processes, that reduce carbon footprint and solvent waste, and improve energy efficiency, for example in sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing.With its core competences in organic and biomolecular chemistry, sustainable polymers, formulation technologies, catalysis, and process R&D, the institute will advance R&D in areas such as low-carbon technologies, carbon life cycle assessment, sustainable materials and green manufacturing processes. ISCE2 is a re-organisation of A*STAR’s former Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences.

I am accountable to ED IMRE (or equivalent) for talent management, research planning, and building long-term capabilities to enhance ASTAR's mission. I lead a team of over 60 research scientists and technical staff, fostering their development and career growth within IMRE. My responsibilities include recruiting, mentoring, and fostering teamwork in the department and IMRE. I also develop the department's long-term vision, roadmaps, and strategies, aligning with strategic research areas. I allocate manpower and manage financial resources according to ASTAR policies and regulations. Ensuring staff compliance with regulations and legislation is also part of my role. I aim to increase IMRE's and A*STAR's scientific visibility and foster collaborations within the scientific community and industry, both nationally and internationally.

I oversaw the A*STAR Personal Care Programme, the largest basic personal care research funding in Singapore with SGD 25 million and 7 projects. My role was to ensure project deliverables were met, which led to developments in polymers, encapsulation techniques, surfactant modeling, and cosmetic formulations. I also helped attract MNCs to set up R&D labs in Singapore and supported SMEs in improving their technological capabilities.

As the President of the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC), I oversee an organization established in March 1970 to serve the chemical profession in Singapore. Initially linked to the Royal Institute of Chemistry in London, the SNIC was founded to meet the increasing demand for local support for chemists and to uphold professional competence and ethical standards. Our mission is to advance Chemistry in Singapore, uphold professional standards, represent our members, and educate the public on Chemistry's community contributions. Our activities include organizing professional events, awarding students, promoting chemical education, and supporting interdisciplinary efforts through the Singapore National Academy of Science.

Biomacromolecules is a leading forum for the dissemination of cutting-edge research at the interface of polymer science and biology. Submissions to Biomacromolecules should contain strong elements of innovation in terms of macromolecular design, synthesis and characterization, or in the application of polymer materials to biology and medicine.As associate editor, I handle some of the manuscripts submitted to the journal, send them out for reviews and determine the next steps.

I was a Visiting Professor at the Melville Laboratory for Polymer Synthesis in the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, where his study on the anti-cancer smart biomaterials is being done.
