After almost 19 years on my beautiful twin island of Trinidad & Tobago, my passion for learning and cultivating new experiences led me on a path to the Boston area which, against all odds, became my second home. It is likely the reason why I was so drawn to a career in Forensics: a diverse field that required its workforce to not only be scientists, but also investigators, problem-solvers, teachers and public speakers. There is not a day that I am not required to take on several roles. I may start the week as a case-working analyst, screening evidence for biological material and developing DNA profiles from probative samples. Along the way I might be required to substitute as a laboratory technician, preparing in-house reagents, quality checking commercial kits and reagents and maintaining instrumentation. As the field is constantly advancing, there is never a project that does not need assistance to validate and bring online at the lab. Lastly a Forensic Scientist is nothing if they are not proficient in customer service. As analysts, we are useless if we cannot communicate with those with non-science backgrounds (like law enforcement, attorneys, judges and jury) what our job entails, what our results are and what they mean in the context of a case. And strangely enough, this is the part of the job that I enjoy the most; connecting with others. This is what drives me in my career; not the Forensic field in itself, but the ever growing list of abilities that I must possess to be successful. Therefore, I can only hope that wherever my career leads, that it will not only feed my passion for learning, but continue to foster the knowledge and skills that I have already acquired, while teaching me some new ones along the way.
