Archives Reference Desk InternUnited States Holocaust Memorial Museum Jun 2009 - Aug 2009As an intern at the Archives Reference Desk for a second summer I was upgraded to an assistant, which offered me more responsibility. I had the opportunity to delegate to others tasks in which they would get a good sense of the assignments in the Archives. I assisted researchers with their requests for materials, accessed materials from storage, explained the use of the equipment and copying and scanning policies. I responded to oral and written reference inquiries. I researched information and used books and microform to obtain materials for the requests. I helped prepare and fix finding aids, one of the most important tasks for the Archives so more materials will be easily accessible for researchers. I typed and edited transcripts and time coded notes of oral history interviews. I translated some oral history testimonies for researchers on the spot. I gave an orientation to the Archives to a new fellow. I also took over the tasks at the Reference Desk when my supervisor was not at work. I often answered questions and felt comfortable addressing inquiries from researchers and visitors. -
Archives Reference Desk InternUnited States Holocaust Memorial Museum Jun 2008 - Aug 2008I worked at the Archives reference desk under the supervision of the Reference Archivist. My priority was to address and assist any researcher or visitor that came up to the reference desk. I was expected to guide visitors and help them focus their research to specific materials. The other interns and I took turns manning the computer at the reference desk in order to help visitors. Another task was pulling archival material for the researchers and visitors from cold storage three times a day. While sitting behind the desk I worked on my specifically assigned projects, prepared reference requests or cleaned up and organized the area. I compiled monthly statistics of the materials used by researchers and visitors. My individual projects included researching pre-war life in Polish towns using Yizkor (Memorial) books in Hebrew. I often helped translate materials in Hebrew for researchers. I also translated Oral History testimonies from Hebrew to English.
