· Developed a tool set for studying interactions between complex objects and granular media. The tool set includes: Experimentally validated discrete element method (DEM) simulations for granular media. A DEM simulation interfaced with the commercial multi-body software Working Model to simulate sand interacting with animal/robot model. Analysis and visualization codes that utilize MATLAB, vPython, and POVRay. · Revealed principles of undulatory swimming in granular media. · Analyzed the drag induced lift force in granular media, developed a predictive model for the lift force, and predicted influence of the lift force on sand swimming. · Developed a resistive force theory for undulatory swimming in sand which explained the performance of the sandfish lizard. · Developed a model for sand-swimming robots which guided the design, speed optimization, and depth control of a sand-swimming robot.
