Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

I conduct research through the SafePREP study, which seeks to understand the experiences of NICU families and to use their feedback to improve hospital care. I reach out to mothers of premature babies born before 37 weeks staying in the NICU, inform them about our study, and facilitate their entry into SafePREP.

I lead the telephone outreach team of the Department of Pediatrics under the guidance of my mentor, Dr. Rebecca Feinstein. The objective of my project is to assess if telephone outreach is an efficient and effective method to conduct patient outreach amidst the ample healthcare barriers presented by COVID-19. I inform patients that clinics are safe and open during the pandemic, help them make any appointments they need, and tell them about the Path 2 Purpose teen depression prevention program.

Through my research fellowship in the Summer Scholars Program of the Department of Pediatrics, I was awarded a stipend to continue my ongoing telephone outreach project in addition to taking on a clinical outreach role, supervising and training new telephone outreach volunteers, and conducting data analysis.

Department Of Neurology And Rehabilitation

I researched immunological pathways related to multiple sclerosis, and investigated various proteins that could potentially be indicative of those pathways. The lab skills I gained were cellular imaging, antibody introduction, and the use of the AxioVision and ImageJ programs.

Department Of Psychology

I studied the differences between speech patterns in solo and group settings. I transcribed participant dialogues and underwent basic training in conducting psychology research.

I tutored preschool through high-school level students in reading, writing, and math. I also helped grade their assessments and record proficiency trends in their respective subjects and age groups.

At the USDA NCAUR laboratory, I assessed the immune response of the mosquito Aedes aegypti to fungal entomopathogens. With my mentor, Dr. Jose Luis Ramirez, I performed RNA extractions, gel electrophoresis tests, cDNA syntheses, and PCR and qPCR runs, learned about the direct connection of lab research to real world applications, and gave a lecture about my findings.
