About Yi-Chen Lee

I'm an assistant professor of agronomy at Fort Hays State University, I teach Agronomic Crop Science and Soil and Water Conservation. Research interest include plant breeding and gene discovery. I previously worked as Senior Research Associate at the Soybean Breeding and Genetics Group at the University of Missouri Fisher Delta Research Extension and Education Center. My research interests include breeding high-yielding soybean cultivars (MG 4 and 5) with disease resistance (Phytophthora root rot, cercospora leaf blight, mature seed damage resistance); elevated seed composition (protein, oil, high oleic low linolenic acid; and food grade soybean (edamame and tofu). I received my PhD in Agricultural Sciences with a concentration in Plant breeding and Genetics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. My research specializes in soybean diseases phenotyping and identification and confirmation of soybean disease resistance genes (soybean sudden death syndrome, frogeye leaf spot, soybean cyst nematode, reniform nematodes, purple leaf blight, oil and protein content). I have also worked on maize breeding and genetics. I have collaborated with researchers from other universities, USDA researchers, private breeding companies. I have mentored and trained 9 undergraduate student workers and 2 master students. My teaching experience include instructor for senior level Crop Pest Control class, teaching assistant for undergraduate level Introduction to Crop Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Introduction to Agricultural Biotechnology and graduate level Field Plot Technique. I have worked in the Non Government Organization, Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund. I was assigned to work in the Taiwan Technical Mission in Nicaragua as an Assistant Technician. The projects I worked on included production of common bean pedigreed seed and enhancement of rice quality and yield. My responsibilities included field investigation, collaborating with local farmers, financial management of cooperative, and training farmers. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with government agencies including Instituto Nicaragüense de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA) and Ministerio Agropecuario y Forestal (MAGFOR).My industry experience include working as the Field Trial Representative at Taiwan Bayer Crop Science. I worked in the Research and Development group and focused on Herbicide and Pesticide development. I worked with crops including strawberry, mango, jujube, peanuts, and paddy rice.
