I was based in the UCD Research Laboratory in National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin as a full-time PhD researcher.I undertook research into the areas of communication and control for severely physically disabled persons, regularly assisting therapists to provide specialised technical solutions for severely disabled patients within the hospital. My PhD research project explored advanced techniques of signal processing and classification algorithms that could be used to harness vestigial responses from severely physically disabled people, to facilitate communication and environmental control.Image processing, bio-signal processing techniques (EMG, EEG, MMG, EOG and GSR) and audio processing techniques were explored. The course of this research led to development of advanced mathematical models of biological processes as well as novel biosignal and image processing techniques.During my PhD, I presented at several conferences and seminars, assisted in undergraduate tutorials and supervised undergraduates in laboratory assignments.
