I am currently interning at the San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District (SBVWCD) where I assist the Land Resources Team in conducting rare plant surveys, wildlife habitat condition assessments, and nesting bird surveys for special status endangered and threatened species covered under SBVWCD’s Upper Santa Ana River Wash Habitat Conservation Plan (Wash Plan). I help map waters of the United States with submeter accuracy and using GIS technology; carry out local, state, and federally permitted biomonitoring protocols and identify and record California native plant inventories. I also perform a variety of administrative and GIS tasks: review and organize title reports, map property easements, setbacks, entitlements using GIS, review as-built plans and scope of work agreements, track SBVWCD infrastructure maintenance schedules and internal project deliverables per Greenbook: Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction and uniform building code standards, prepare data for inclusion in technical reports, initial studies, and various environmental review processes under CEQA, NEPA, Clean Water Act Section 401 Certification, USACE Section 404 Programmatic Individual Agreement, Section 408 program, USFW 1600 Streambed Alteration Agreement, SWPPP, NPDES, etc. Furthermore, I also represent SBVWCD in a variety of trainings, conferences, and tours, including Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper Training (QWEL), California Society for Ecological Restoration Conference (SERCAL), Santa Ana River Science Symposium, USACE Plunge Creek Tour, USFW Santa Ana River Wash Tour, and an interagency Wilderness & Remote First Aid Training. I personally organized the interagency American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid Training for SBVWCD and partnering agencies’ field staff which educated and certified all participants. This training was nominated for the ACWA JPIA Safety Award for “water industry employees who implement significant safety program improvements”.

While enrolled as a full time college student, I simultaneously worked as a food server/waiter at El Charro Mexican Restaurant. In this role, I served guests authentic Mexican cuisine in a timely manner, practically safe food handling and treating every costumer and co-worker with respect and kindness. Speaking both English and Spanish, this opportunity taught me promotional sales, creative problem solving techniques, strong interpersonal communication and effective time management.

Over the course of my Spring semester, I personally developed and helped publish a themed ESRI Storymap with integrated web components for a specific climate related issue affecting the greater Redlands community. The Storymap outlined strategies that individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprint within their community (residential energy use, waste reduction, transportation alternatives, etcetera) all while incorporating user-friendly spatial tools and a compelling design narrative.

Oak Glen, San Bernardino County, California

As part of a long-term volunteering opportunity, I worked alongside botanists, rangers, and environmental educators to help manage, preserve, and educate the public about the native California ecosystems protected by The Wildlands Conservancy in Oak Glen. This experience taught me how to identify California native plants, bird species, amphibians/reptiles, as well as invasive pest/weed management. Furthermore, I was introduced to irrigation techniques for drought sensitive areas and assisted in general upkeep of the preserve's botanic gardens and surrounding property.

I tutored high school level Spanish as a foreign language in an "as needed" compacity, assisting in grammar, writing, and interpersonal communications skills to high school students.
