Summer Intern
Current1. Estimating Department While working in the estimating department I reviewed drawings and specifications on the Roanoke Biotech project prior to the official bid date. I was responsible for taking the square footage of offices, corridors, bathrooms, walls, closets, elevators. I was also in charge of making sure that every type of door and bathroom partition that was listed in the specifications was present on the drawings. 2. Project Management While I worked with the project managers, I was able to attend and participate in multiple meetings both in person and via phone calls. We attended meetings with architects, subcontractors, and general contractors. I also helped complete subcontracts for the Carilion Tanglewood Job. I filled out the subcontracts discussing the company’s scope of work, MB’s terms and conditions, contract amounts and costs, and contract dates. We also visited various job sites that MB managed and made sure that subcontractors were staying on schedule and the project was moving at the right pace. 3. Worked as a project engineer out in the field at VT USLB For the first few weeks I worked on bathroom partitions (hanging up pilaster, soap dispensers, mirrors, grab bars, toilet paper dispensers, baby changing stations, napkin dispensers, latches, strikes, coat hangers, and door stops) After completing these tasks I set up outdoor furniture (bike racks and benches) and put fire extinguisher cabinets up. The last task I worked on while at Virginia Tech was hanging up 4 by 10 sheets of Inpro in the corridors and classrooms. 4. Accounting Department During this week I helped complete job cost reports and mail checks to subcontractors. I also looked at the company’s over/under sheets, income statements, balance sheets, and job cost reports. I was able to look at the company’s assets, liabilities, and different cost codes to get a further understanding of all the work that goes on behind the scenes of a construction company.
