What’s surprised me most in Software is how secondary the code becomes in a well-oiled engineering machine. I’ve come to believe that a feature’s outcome is all but decided before the first commit. The team’s understanding of the problem-domain, their adherence to a singular vision built atop that understanding, and their ability to rapidly iterate towards that vision – these are the components of success. And from these, the code is a natural side-effect.As my career advances, I seek not only opportunities that enhance my technical and analytical skills but also those that make me a better mentor and communicator; someone who knows when to change direction and when to stay the course. There isn’t much engineering to be done while coloring inside the lines.
