I created and led the organizing practice at ThoughtWorks, which helped groups invent and try out new distributed organizing technologies by building them right in the middle of campaigns. We worked pro bono and with a single group at a time so that we could give groups 100% of our attention. I spent time working with amazing movements in the United States, India, Brazil and South Africa.

Responsible for developing multiple revenue models for the growing Wikimedia Foundation, home of Wikipedia. Through aggressive A/B testing, and creative spaghetti throwing, radically increased revenue through online fundraising while at the same time radically decreased the time fundraising banners appeared on Wikipedia -- allowing the Wikimedia Foundation to grow from 25 to more than 200 employees and establish a stable infrastructure. Built an international A/B testing and payments system that operated in 100 languages and accepted dozens of global payment methods.

Worked to grow and heal the amazing Wikipedia editor community. Worked with very large historical-social datasets to discover systemic problems and opportunities in the community. Ran a "Summer of Research" in which computer science PhD candidates worked in our data to identify problems and opportunities with our community. Ran experiments designed to get the Wikipedia editor community growing again.

Connected ThoughtWorks, a global IT consultancy, with many important non-profit and political software development projects -- for example the 2008 Obama campaign, in which we helped build a whole new generation of volunteer-driven field organizing tools.

Coming out of the 2004 elections -- the first Internet-powered presidential cycle -- Judith Freeman and I were the two stupid people who chose not to start a consulting company and get rich. Instead, we started the New Organizing Institute, to train a new generation of online organizers. The NOI went on to have a major impact on politics, helping to create the talent pool that fed the 2008 Obama and Clinton campaigns, and thousands of other organizations.

Directed digital strategy for a premier communications and fundraising firm, working with clients such as Amnesty International, International Rescue Committee, National Resources Defense Council, the Democratic Party and others to improve their online fundraising and distributed organizing.

Directed the 2005 Internet campaign for the party's reelection campaign. Drank a lot of beer, ate a lot of Chinese food. Hung out with big time British politicians. Who made fun of me constantly. Didn't realize it until later.

Built the first major Internet fundraising operation for a presidential general election. In the end, we raised more than $100 million online, a totally unprecedented figure at the time. Used the campaign website and multi-million member email list to build a distributed organizing campaign on an unprecedented scale. Traveled extensively to field offices in swing states to connect D.C. strategy with the reality on the ground, eliminate bottlenecks and troubleshoot problems.

As MoveOn.org's first Organizing Director, I was privileged to run some of the world's first distributed organizing campaigns and invent many practices and tools that are even now (sadly) at the cutting edge of online politics. I was part of the tiny early MoveOn.org team that attempted to prevent the war in Iraq with our "Let the Inspections Work" campaign. Launched and ran several other ground breaking campaigns way back in these early days. Took leave to work with the Howard Dean campaign to help create the first Internet-powered presidential campaign.

Created some of the Internet's most interesting firsts: The first distributed-organized protests (later known as flash mobs) around the 2000 presidential election crisis; The first political parody site, earning me the title "Garbage Man" from George W Bush; The first crowd-funded political ads. Set FEC precedents. Got sued by Time Warner. Appeared regularly in the media. Sold a lot of bumper stickers. Had a ton of fun.

Sat with workers on their porches and in their living rooms all over America. Worked in factories. Lost and won a lot of campaigns. Learn to campaign and organize. Became a different person.
