About Zander Prinsloo
Economist and data scientist. I currently work at the World Bank in the Development Economics Data Group. My team is responsible for the development of the Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP), one of the World Bank’s premier data products. I contribute to both the technical backend development of PIP and the methodology of measurement, which includes research and analytical work on poverty measurement and indicators. Before working at the World Bank, I worked at Onsi, a fintech company aimed at addressing issues of financial security for flexible workers in the gig-economy. Here, I drove the pricing, data, and analytics function. This includes doing modelling of new and existing financial and insurance products, evaluating these models, conducting experiments, improving our analytics and data infrastructure, etc.I am interested in econometrics, labour and development economics, structural estimation, causal inference, statistical/machine learning. I am one of the most passionate and excited people you are likely to meet, and I care immensely about my work. Outside of work, I am super passionate about endurance sport. I am the co-creator of the CAPE 253 ultra-triathlon (see “The Path of Most Resistance”), which is a continuous 7.5km ocean swim, 136km cycle, and 110km trail run. I have run a number of other ultramarathons, including a 100mile race through and over the mountains of Cape Town. I am currently very interested in questioning how we know what we know, and so am reading books on epistemology. Other interests include the life and music of Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, Russian 19th century Russian literature, watching (sometimes very old) films, and cooking.
