Downstream Migrant Trapping:Technical crew lead in salmonid lifecycle monitoring studies within the Russian River watershed. Crews assembled, placed, and operated rotary screw and funnel-net traps on 5 major tributaries to the Russian River and in the mainstem. Zachary was responsible for identifying and taking weight and length measurements of all species, tagging salmonids and Hitch (Lavinia exilicauda) with PIT tags, and monitoring the health and safety of captured individuals. He also assisted in the operation of PIT tag telemetry nodes in association with trapping to evaluate trap efficiency and salmonid survival.Dry Creek Restoration Habitat Monitoring and Assessment: Zachary helped lead crews performing habitat topographic surveys using Leica and Topcon total stations. Crews collected two-dimensional data on depth and velocity to create TIN and Raster maps of Dry Creek restoration project sites. Maps were used to compare habitat availability and suitability for juvenile salmonids pre- and post-construction, and to monitor annual hydrological and topographical changes.Russian River Estuary Salmonid Diet Study:Zachary assisted in collecting data on steelhead diets within the Russian River estuary. A Beach seine net was used to sample standardized habitats along the shore of the Russian River estuary. Crews identified fish species and took length and weight data on juvenile steelhead trout and also used gastric lavage to retrieve gut samples for analysis. He also assisted in the collection of epi-benthic invertebrates and measurement of habitat conditions of salinity, turbidity, temperature, and DO along the axis of the Russian River using a drift-tow, benthic core sampler, and YSI Multi-sonde. Results were used to construct estuary food webs and to assess the impact of agency management of the estuary on food availability.

Predatory Fish Relocation Study, Clifton Court Forebay(CCF): The PFRS involves capturing and removing predators from CCF and transporting them to Bethany Reservoir with the goal of decreasing pre-screen loss of protected fish species with an emphasis on Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss). During this study, Zachary acted as a field technician overseeing the proper deployment and retrieval of commercial fishing gears, including hoop traps, fyke traps, and beach seine.

Zachary assisted staff in the maintenance and care of Coho hatchery stock. He helped with tank cleaning, measuring feed quantities and feeding fish. He has PIT & coded-wire tagged hundreds of Coho smolts, and helped in the release of fish into various tributaries of the Russian River. In preparation for spawning, he helped conduct broodstock inventory and fish sonograms to measure female fertility. He aided in the collection and mixing of milt and eggs for spawning and maintained fertilized egg health by removing eggs with fungus.
