With an agri-business focus, the firm advised on acquisitions, aggregations, and expansions, and also provided post-transaction support such as installing and overseeing management teams. It provided an access point into Tasmania distinct from the service offered by real estate agents, accountants, and lawyers. The firm ceased operating in 2020.

The task at Avebury was to plan the complete re-start of the mine and processing operation; turning an empty site with impressive infrastructure and a great resource into a safe, efficient, profitable mining operation once again.

Rosebery

GM of the Rosebery underground mine in Tasmania. The site employs about 400 people and is an industry icon: 75 years of continuous operation and, in the present day, one of the state's safest operations. My best wishes to the team that continue to make Rosebery great!

GM and SSE of the Century zinc mine in northwest Queensland...one of Australia's great mines. At the time, the world's second-largest zinc mine and Australia's highest volume single pit (48M bcm moved each year at that time). A wonderful team of close to 1000 people, a great working relationship with the traditional owners and a commitment to safety that was second to none. I was fortunate in this role to have the opportunity to act in the site General Manager role for some months which gave me the chance to practice being a GM with lots of coaching and support from my boss, despite her illness during that time. I learnt a lot about people and about patience and trust.

During this time I led a regional SAP implementation team and rolled out PDG's "A Mine Standard" global operational excellence framework.

Kalgoorlie

Feasibility Studies on more than 20 new mining projects in the Goldfields region, many of which were brought through to become operating mines. I worked with a wonderful team of geos, engineers and mets who did some seriously good science and engineering. The best of our projects are still operating: the Raleigh and Rubicon/Hornet mines near Kalgoorlie.

What I did not realise at the time was that Renison was producing young managers - my friends - who would go on to define our industry in years to come: I am in awe of the success and achievements of my many Renison friends. All construction and engineering surveying associated with the building of the site roads, offices, dams and water management structures; as well as the sinking of the shaft and the associated underground development and infrastructure.

This was a great experience for me - I started this business with my boss and friend, Dave Wilson. As a young professional I learnt some valuable business lessons that have held me in good stead for twenty years and look back fondly on those times!

Underground development and production surveying, control of mine excavations and dilution, measurement of waste and ore mining, fill placement and calculation of payment volumes. Unfortunately also as the registered mine surveyor I mapped accident sites, including fatalities. This opened my eyes to the absolute importance of safety.
