As a disabled veteran, I experienced the importance and necessity for accessible, safe, and effective fitness training opportunities for persons with disabilities. My personal and professional missions are to provide education and guidance to support the inclusion of all persons with disabilities in the fitness community, training, and competitions. After college, I was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and was deployed to combat zones multiple times, and served on numerous counter-piracy operations. I suffered a tragic injury that required hospitalization for months and required ​20+ surgeries attempting to save my leg and regain function from paraplegia​. Rehab and recovery were a slow and demoralizing process…until I rejoined a CrossFit affiliate.Despite losing function and sensation in my right leg and suffering from ​a spinal cord injury, I returned to active-duty service for two more years. During my last tour, I co-founded Kuwait Naval Base CrossFit (a military affiliate) and then subsequently founded Fathom CrossFit. From day one, Fathom served adaptive athletes in Southern California and active-duty service members from Naval Medical Center San Diego​.In 2017, my team and I wrote the CrossFit Specialty Course: Adaptive Training to provide education for CrossFit trainers. In 2019 I founded Adaptive Training Academy (ATA) to continue providing adaptive and inclusive education for the CrossFit community and other fitness professionals. In 2021, we converted ATA to a 501(c)3 non-profit to continue the mission started in 2019, but also to provide guidance and financial assistance to gyms with the goal to create 1,000 adaptive and inclusive training programs in the US by 2025.
