Using a community development approach, I worked in collaboration across all sectors to foster key relationships with NHS Lewisham, Ward Assemblies, General Practices, Lewisham Borough Council, Voluntary and Community Organisations and Members of the Public by identifying and reducing obstacles that prevented the uptake of screening through a range of actions, projects and initiatives.Integrated equality, equity and cultural competency within all policies, practices, systems and procedures. Developed strategies to reach the most disadvantaged and hard to reach groups using a wide range of methods and techniques, including group discussions, audio-visual materials, printed materials, theatre etc. to assess ways of improving uptake to cancer screening services.Provided help and advice to local community groups, GP Practices and other health professionals on effective ways of working locally to improve the numbers of people attending screening reduce the inequalities in the uptake. Examples of initiatives I lead on included:Coordination of a project aimed at working with local Black Afro Caribbean women to capture their voices and stories associated with Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Screening. This lead to a production of a Health Promotion DVD and a set of images which were added to the NHS library database to allow positive images of black women to be used in health promotion literature.
