Profile bio

About Zachary Huffman

I am a recent MASc aerospace engineering graduate, where I was part of Carleton University’s AeroAcoustics Research team. Much of my work focused on aircraft noise modelling and data management. For my thesis, I created an accurate model to predict turbulence-induced aircraft cabin noise by assembling a large collection of wind tunnel noise data, and by implementing machine learning regression techniques in R. I have similar experience in Python, successfully creating accurate neural network models via the TensorFlow library to predict airfoil performance. Previously, as an undergraduate, I was a research assistant at Carleton’s Thermofluids and Aerosol Research Lab. While there, I worked extensively with MATLAB, both by developing scripts to streamline the processing of data from fluid deposition experiments, and by partnering with the Canadian Nuclear Association to develop emission forecast models. Additionally, I had several project management opportunities, including as an executive of payload design at Carleton’s CU InSpace rocketry team, and as a design and testing lead for an allergen exposure chamber at Red Maple Trials.

Graduate Research Assistant

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

  • Over a two-year period, wind tunnel data at Carleton was used to develop an empirical model that estimates the contribution of turbulent pressure fluctuations to aircraft cabin noise:
  • Conducted a literature review to find previous models, identified accuracies and shortcomings, and used these results to propose a novel method for model generation.
  • Assembled a large collection of wind tunnel experimental results, featuring 28,000 unique data points.
  • Cleansed the wind tunnel data… Show more Over a two-year period, wind tunnel data at Carleton was used to develop an empirical model that estimates the contribution of turbulent pressure fluctuations to aircraft cabin.
  • Cleansed the wind tunnel data, combined it into a single dataset, and exported it into easy-to-use Excel (.csv) and.txt files using the tidyverse libraries in the statistical programming language R.
  • Created a novel, iterative model generation technique that allowed 186 unique model forms and 25 candidate variables to be tested.
