Adalah - عدالة

Adalah, translates to ‘justice' in Arabic, has been established to address the complex legal issues arising from the recent conflict in Yemen. As Yemen's first non-aligned, non-governmental human rights organisation we work to provide international support to the difficulties on the ground faced by civil society, international institutions, countries and other stakeholders with an interest in Yemen. We currently fill a crucial void that is heavily not catered for by other organisations. With local and political knowledge, Adalah offers a unique combination of legal expertise, field analysis and academic research that is combined regional strategic thinking. This combination places Adalah at the forefront of Yemen’s human rights spectrum, linking Western expertise with local civil society operators. Not only has the rapidly worsening situation in Yemen resulted in a loss of civilian life, it has also caused greater difficulties for interested stakeholders, such as international organisations and local civil society organisations, to operate in the country and provide essential services to the population. In particular, various legal dilemmas have arisen during the course of the conflict, especially in relation to civilian casualties and the use of child soldiers. Addressing these needs faced by interested stakeholders for the benefit Yemenis is a task with huge challenges due to the ever changing dynamics of the conflict. Through its team of researchers, lawyers, on-the-ground trainers and human rights advocates, Adalah's mandate is threefold to: i. promote human rights and the rule of law; ii. develop and empower local civil society; and iii. advocate for Yemen issues among internationals, local stakeholders and the general public. Our multifaceted mandate allows us to both recognize the importance attached to the safeguarding of basic human rights, whilst also allowing us develop the local organisations on the ground to safeguard such rights.
