One of Hawaii’s greatest challenges continues to be providing affordable housing and economic opportunities for our residents, families and seniors. AHED is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation whose mission is to support the preservation, rehabilitation and development of, and access to, affordable and workforce housing, and to support economic opportunities for lower-income families. AHED works to advance its housing mission in three main areas: (1) providing relief for the poor and distressed by creating and preserving low-income housing; (2) providing relief for the elderly or physically handicapped by supporting affordable housing that services their special needs; and (3) addressing the needs of Hawaii’s workforce by supporting the development of workforce housing and economic initiatives intended to decrease the disparity between the cost of housing and the incomes of individuals and families. AHED’s economic development goal is to encourage and foster employment and business opportunities in lower-income communities in Hawaii, thereby improving the residents’ quality of life. AHED accomplishes this goal by supporting organizations who provide: (1) education and job training to lower income residents, (2) childcare and similar programs for the children of lower income residents to allow parents time to work or further their education and job training, (3) support entrepreneurship and small businesses in lower-income communities where they can provide quality job opportunities for residents and easier access to goods and services closer to their homes, and (4) encourage larger businesses to expend more resources toward affordable housing and transportation options for their workforce employees.
