This idea focuses on developing smart textiles for water harvesting, drawing inspiration from nature’s adaptations. Using liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), these fabrics would respond dynamically to changes in humidity, expanding and contracting to maximize water collection. Inspired by the desert beetle, which collects water from fog, and plants like the ice plant and African daisy, which adjust their structures in response to moisture, these textiles would passively gather water from the air. The system would be a low-cost, scalable solution for arid regions, offering a sustainable way to provide water not only for drinking but also for agriculture, such as irrigating plants and supporting greenhouses. This simple and affordable system could make a real difference in developing regions, where traditional water-harvesting methods are often too expensive or difficult to maintain.
