They may not know much about the condition, or when it is a good time to return to work, or even what work tasks would be safe for the employee to manage. Here are some tops tips: ONE: Open up the conversation early. Taking a proactive and transparent approach to support a return to work will help everyone. Encourage a confidential discussion about how they are doing and what impact it is having on them day to day. This will start to give you insight into how they are currently managing and when a return to work activities is going to be likely. TWO: Consider what adjustments are available. A big factor affecting a return to work is what support can be implemented and for how long. Discussing which work tasks they think they are going to struggle with will help you identify what you reasonably can adjust to help them get back to work. THREE: Stay in touch. It is really important to agree with the employee how often you are going to 'check in' with them, but also remember to keep them up-to-date with any internal changes in the company. This can help them feel included and that you haven't forgotten them. FOUR: Get help when you need it. Ensure you utilise Occupational Health services when you need it, they are of course the professionals and can give an impartial assessment of the situation.
