Bhoomika is an organization which was founded over a decade ago by Dr. B. P. Rath. The roots of our organization can be traced to when we began restoration and rehabilitation work for the Super Cyclone of 1999. This is where we found our true calling - to help people and bring about meaningful change in their lives.
One of the primary goals of the organization is to provide quality eye care to the marginalized, especially to those suffering from cataract-induced blindness. India has been identified as the blind capital of the world with over 30 million people suffering, and the number only continues to grow. Cataract is responsible for approximately 62% of these cases, despite being treatable. This is because most eye care services are often inaccessible, especially to the populations living in the margins such as the poor, aged, tribal communities, etc.
Identifying this need, Bhoomika established its first eye care hospital and training center in Odisha in 2007, recruiting staff and paramedics from the community itself. We have been growing in our scope and work ever since, ensuring that everyone can access quality healthcare as is their right. We are focused on working towards our mission of ‘Prevention of Blindness’, putting together outreach programs with the help of vision centers and hospitals, and strengthening the eye care ecosystem. Additionally, we have also been organizing eye examination camps in every Gram Panchayat, twice a year. Upon examination, glasses and medicines are also provided to those in need, and referrals are made to the hospital for those who require surgery. We also assist them in their commute to the hospital, as well as their lodging at the facility.
We have also expanded our work to address other concerns pertaining to rural livelihoods such as - quality secondary education for children, hygiene and general health to name a few.
