Why We Exist: Big Mike’s Bottom Line Our family has learned so much from Michael’s courageous 10-year journey with colorectal cancer. When he passed away in December 2021, we lost a huge part of our hearts—but we gained a mission. Big Mike’s Bottom Line is our family’s next chapter—a way to honor Michael’s legacy, keep his spirit alive, and help prevent others from enduring the same devastating loss. Together—Michael Jr., Alex, Natalie, and Mary Beth—along with our Board of Advisors, we are committed to using our “ACE” to help eradicate colorectal cancer (CRC) as we know it: Alleviate the burden, isolation, and stigma surrounding CRC Communicate and normalize conversations about poop, warning signs, and symptoms Educate everyone, especially those too young for standard screening, to change future outcomes In our journey, we discovered painful truths. We knew too little, placed too much faith in the medical system, and assumed that Michael’s first battle with cancer in 2014 was the end of the story. But a routine blood test in 2020 changed everything—revealing Stage IV CRC with metastases to the liver. Michael was a fighter. For those who knew him, you know that he didn’t back down from anything. He won—in life, in work, and for the people he loved. But this battle was too big for one person. We learned firsthand what it means in the cancer community when people say, “No one fights alone.” Now, we fight together—for awareness, education, and early detection. We commit to: Ending the silence around CRC by normalizing conversations about bowel health Reaching people early, well before screening age, with prevention-focused education Changing the narrative so that CRC receives the attention, funding, and urgency it deserves—just like other major cancers, including breast cancer We’re turning our pain into purpose.
