In Germany for example the number of criminal offences registered by the German police in 2022, by type indicated that of 1,780,783 thefts (cars, burglary, street crime) bicycles represented 344,669 (or 19.34%).
By adding a tracking device to a bicycle, its location can be tracked, plus a wealth of health metrics generated. You can gain insights from health metrics such as cadence and power, which are beyond the capabilities of a mobile phone or fitness watch. If the unfortunate should happen and your bike is stolen, its position is shared with you and can be shared with the authorities with the aim of locating and retrieving your bike.
Previous attempts have failed due to short battery lives which involved removal from the bike for charging and or too visible and easily removed by a thief.
Proliferation and adoption of such a device could lead to a reduction in bike crime, at a time when there are calls of large-scale adoption of cycling, as part of active daily travel to reduce carbon emissions.
