Introducing Biochar On Site: A Hands-On Approach to Place-Based Biochar
At Biochar On Site (BOS), our mission is to normalize on-site biochar production and application as a widespread, locally adapted practice. By focusing on education, innovation, community engagement, and advocacy, BOS empowers land managers, foresters, conservationists, and communities to transform biomass “waste” into a valuable resource, reduce wildfire risks, and increase soil carbon for healthier, more resilient ecosystems.
We bridge the gap between biochar education and real-world implementation by offering practical tools, training, and resources. BOS promotes everything from flame cap kilns to improved conservation burn piles to air curtain burners. These affordable solutions help keep valuable organic materials local, retain soil carbon, improve water cycles, enhance forest and soil resilience, & actively cut emissions at the source.
We envision a future in which biochar is a standard land management tool, not just a niche practice. By scaling local solutions, we aim to enable land stewards everywhere to create biochar right where it’s needed most, turning potential liabilities like excess biomass into a powerful carbon-sequestering asset!
Originally launched in 2022 as Biochar in the Woods by Kelpie Wilson w support from the US Biochar Initiative (USBI), BOS became an independent initiative in January 2025 and is currently pursuing nonprofit status. Now led by Program Director Korina Stark & Outreach & Development lead John Webster, our team is dedicated to hands-on learning, monthly video meet-ups, digital resources, and in-person workshops that make biochar both accessible and impactful.
