Project title: Fabrication, plasmonic and photothermal performance and cytotoxicity of TiN-based nanoparticles in the infrared biological window for biomedical applications (BioNanoTiN). Plasmonics have been established as one of the most dynamic and fast developing technologies nowadays. One of the major drawbacks in the path from lab to market is the reliance of most plasmonic systems on the traditional plasmonic metals Au and Ag, which cannot endure high temperatures and/or the high electric fields of concentrated light present in most realistic applications. This obstacle was proposed to be overcome by the use of refractory nitrides such as TiN. Of particular importance of the plasmonic performance of TiN is the ability to extent into the NIR range via alloying with Al or by varying the stoichiometry y of TiNy. Resonant plasmonic NPs in the NIR can be used for the efficient collection of electromagnetic energy and heating of a confined volume in the vicinity of particle. NPs delivered to a tumor region can be heated via a NIR laser. TiNy and doped TiN NPs may provide resonances exactly in the desired range. The most promising route of obtaining plasmonic TiN particles, which have proven plasmonic activity is by laser ablation. As the plasmonic operation in the NIR range is extremely sensitive to the stoichiometry or doping of TiN the laser ablation emerges as the undisputed method of choice, because one of its main assets is that retains in the NPs the elemental composition of the target. The main scientific goal of the project is to fabricate functional refractory and stable plasmonic NPs of TiN, TiNy and doped TiN with high absorption in the NIR biological window for biomedical applications. The research project was supported by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) under the “2nd Call for H.F.R.I. Research Projects to support Post-Doctoral Researchers” (Project Number: 1099).
