The Black Seahorse is more than just a gift shop; we are a collective of creative indigenous artists who want to showcase our art and products designed to present our stories and connection to sea country. Our beautiful Wunyami (the tribal name for Green Island), is a culturally significant site for the Gungandji and Yidinji tribes. Wunyami is covered in a 6000-year-old rainforest on an ancient coral cay and surrounded by protected coral and seagrass beds.
The Wunyami Tours is guided by indigenous operators who have been given permission by their elders to share the ancient creation story of the island. They combine and translate tribal science and western science to give a complete history of the island and its cultural significance to the Gungandji and Yidinji tribes.
The Black Seahorse is known to bring luck amongst the elders of this Sea Country and all along the Great Barrier Reef. Therefore, the Black Seahorse wants to give back.
20% of all profits will be reinvested into research and development of embedding tribal science back into the management of Sea Country in and around Green Island.
The Black Seahorse offers cultural experiences and beautiful handcrafted gifts all with an investment in the protection, restoration and enhancement of the Great Barrier Reef seascapes through the reintroduction of tribal management of Sea Country.
