My enthusiasm for strategy as well as for personal & organisational effectiveness draws on the experience I have gained in an extended working career – 52 years & counting. I aim to be like Peter Drucker, who was still consulting & writing shortly before his death at 94.
A believer in Appreciative Inquiry – which focuses on what works & getting more of it. Convinced that involvement leads to commitment.
Have spent time in academia, business, government, the not-for-profit sector, politics, & small business.
My job titles span A to Z - activist, business broker, coach, development expert (local & small business), editor, facilitator …. writer, xylophone player (just kidding) yacht hand (for my dad), & (isi)Zulu history enthusiast.
Worked with CEOs (a number), founders of international businesses (3), professors (plenty), rogues (1 or 2), & Vice-Chancellors (3). Have met archbishops (several), bishops (ditto), a king, several presidents (good & bad), political leaders of all persuasions, & princes.
I believe my experience gives me useful insights into leadership, learning, employee engagement, & strategy implementation which can add value for you.
Eldest of three sons who grew up on sugar mills. Am drawn to the local & rural. Dad was a fitter & turner & mom a secretary. I joke that I was raised by a dog. My much-loved mother let Paddy the dog do most of my early child-rearing & I have the pictures to prove it.
My dad – archetypal action man - was of English stock. My mom – fierce intellect who suffered no fools – was of Afrikaans stock. An unlikely partnership that lasted for over 70 years. One grandmother was born in Scotland - the other three grandparenwere 2nd or 3rd generation South Africans.
Left bereft by the death of my English life partner of 45 years; grandfather to two awesome young women (don’t tell them I said so).
