Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) is a state-owned company under the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, established in July 2008. It manages submarine cable systems connecting Bangladesh to global telecommunications networks, playing a vital role in enhancing Internet access, capacity, and affordability.
BSCPLC emerged following the Bangladesh Cable and Telephone Board (Amendment) Ordinance 2008, separating the SEA-ME-WE-4 (SMW4) submarine cable from the outdated BTTB. Incorporated on June 24, 2008, the company began operations on July 1, 2008, with an authorized capital of BDT 1000 crore and a paid-up capital of BDT 164.91 crore.
Recognizing the risks of relying on a single cable, BSCPLC joined the SEA-ME-WE-5 (SMW5) consortium in 2011. After signing agreements in 2014, the SMW5 cable launched in 2017, boosting Bangladesh’s bandwidth capacity alongside SMW4 to 7220 Gbps. These advancements align with government initiatives to expand affordable Internet access.
BSCPLC is now advancing its third submarine cable project under the SEA-ME-WE-6 (SMW6) consortium. With a capacity expanded from 6,600 Gbps to 13,200 Gbps, the project is 73% complete as of July 2024 and is expected to finish by 2025. This initiative underscores BSCPLC’s commitment to fortifying Bangladesh’s digital connectivity and driving economic progress.
