Calciner – VTT LaunchPad Team Calciner is revolutionizing the electrification of heavy industrial processes with innovative technology rooted in electric calcination and the insights gained from its development. Our key innovation lies in utilizing unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions. Through thermochemical reduction, we can convert CO₂ into CO-rich syngas, a renewable synthetic fuel. Syngas enables the indirect electrification of heavy industrial processes without requiring costly investments in fundamental process changes. Most importantly, the syngas we produce will be more cost-effective than using fossil fuels. Beyond industrial applications, syngas can be refined into electrofuels for sectors like maritime and aviation. Compared to direct CO₂ conversion, our reduction-based approach enables over 20% cost savings in fuel production—both in capital expenditures and operational costs. Additionally, syngas improves hydrocarbon yields, as it avoids wasting valuable hydrogen by turning it into water. For instance, in methanol production, our process allows 50% more end-product to be generated from the same amount of hydrogen.
