CalFibre

CalFibre specializes in producing wood-free Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) using post-harvest rice straw, offering an innovative and sustainable alternative to traditional wood-based MDF. By annually renewing this resource, CalFibre contributes to the conservation of approximately 4,200 acres of forest, which equals about 180,000 metric tons of wood. Furthermore, this unique approach significantly reduces carbon emissions. CalFibre's local sourcing of post-harvest rice straw leads to a reduction of 150,000 tons of CO2e emissions, as compared to the emissions generated by forest management, wood harvesting, and transportation. An additional environmental benefit lies in the prevention of methane emissions. By utilizing rice straw, CalFibre eliminates around 66,000 tons of methane gas, which is equivalent to approximately 1.848 million tons of CO2. This process also saves up to 18 billion gallons of water, meeting the annual water requirements of 500,000 residents in the Bay Area. Furthermore, it prevents the release of 1.4 million tons of CO2 associated with traditional water management processes. The rice straw utilized by CalFibre has sequestered approximately 300,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, which remains stored in valuable products rather than being re-emitted, making CalFibre a pioneer in sustainable and environmentally responsible materials production.
