Canboulay is freedom, an ode to bondage. It challenges you to illuminate a path forward. Canboulay comes from “Cannes Brulées”, meaning burnt cane. In the 1800s slaves torched sugarcane stalks to reveal the sucrose-laden stalks for harvest. The ash then enriched the soil, propelling new growth and like the phoenix lush sugarcane fields rose from ground. At the end of slavery in 1843, the burning of the cane evolved into a celebration on the plantations, with freed slaves parading burning cane stalks to symbolize freedom, change and transformation. They heralded rebirth, renewal, independent thought and expression and a pathway to independence.
