Carey Group has been part of the North Queensland community since 1951, when Brian Carey joined Larry Kelly’s accounting practice in Ingham. The firm grew with the addition of Brian’s sons, John and Robert, and became BJ Carey and Company. In 1988, Brian’s son Joe joined the family business, continuing the Carey legacy.
In 2002, Carey Group expanded with the opening of the Townsville office, offering Financial Planning and SMSF Administration alongside accounting services. Over the years, the business evolved to become Carey Accountants, Carey Financial, and Strategic SMSF, reflecting the growing range of services offered.
In 2016, the firm restructured as Carey Group, a name that better captured the breadth of services across Accounting, Audit, Financial Planning, SMSF, and Business Advisory. The Townsville office became the group’s central hub, and in 2019, it underwent a major renovation to support the growing team and client base. That same year, Matt Thomson joined as CEO and Managing Partner, bringing fresh leadership and a renewed focus on client service and growth.
Carey Group has continued to grow through key mergers. In 2017, Shirvington Partners joined the group, strengthening its presence in Northern Queensland. In 2021, Carey Group welcomed Indigo Financial Services in Townsville and Barrier Reef Accounting in Cairns. This expansion brought Greg Stanton, a Cairns local with deep roots in the construction and small business sectors, into the Carey Group family as a Partner. Greg’s experience ensures clients in Far North Queensland receive practical, tailored advice.
