Castle Durrow stands as a testament to the evolution of Irish architecture, crafted between 1712 and 1715 during a pivotal era of transition. Reflecting a departure from earlier defensive structures, the castle embodies an era where opulence and refined taste took precedence, marking the ascendancy of a new Protestant aristocracy. Initiated by Colonel William Flower in 1712, Castle Durrow became the cherished residence of the Flower family for over two centuries, renowned for their benevolent stewardship of the land. However, financial constraints led to their departure in 1922, setting off a series of ownership changes that would shape the castle's destiny. In 1929, the Parish of Durrow took ownership of Castle Durrow, repurposing it as St. Fintan’s College and Convent, a move highlighting the adaptability of historical landmarks to modern needs. Under the management of the Presentation order, the castle served as an educational institution until 1987. In the 1990s, Castle Durrow underwent a transformative renovation led by Peter and Shelly Stokes. This extensive endeavor, spanning three years, rejuvenated the castle to its former glory. From replacing the roof to restoring original features such as black oak beams, stained glass windows, and ornate plastered ceilings, every detail was meticulously attended to. The interior was tastefully furnished with pieces carefully sourced from auctions and adorned with family heirlooms, culminating in a seamless blend of old-world charm and contemporary comfort. Today, Castle Durrow stands as a distinguished destination managed by the Stokes family, welcoming guests with the same warmth and hospitality as old family friends.
