🧠A Cavernoma is an abnormality in a blood vessel in the brain or spinal cord. Cavernomas can haemmorhage causing symptoms such as haemmorhagic stroke, seizures & focal neurological deficit. Also known as cavernous malformation or cavernous angioma, cavernoma can be inherited affecting children, young people & adults alike. There are no disease modifying drugs for cavernoma, and there is not treatment - but there are several promising candidates with proof of concept in human and animal studies.
🔬CAUK is the patient group for the first ever pilot clinical trial for Cavernoma - the CARE study - which seeks to determine the most effective treatment for symptomatic brain cavernoma. Recruitment to this has now closed.
