The Frédéric-Joliot Institute for Life sciences is one of the nine institutes of the CEA's Fundamental Research Division.
It brings together some 740 men and women - researchers, engineers, technicians, administrative staff, doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows - to work on scientific projects aimed at understanding the mechanisms of living organisms, integrating all temporal and spatial scales of analysis.
The Institute brings together a wide range of skills and disciplines needed to carry out what are essentially interdisciplinary projects: biology, of course, but also medicine, chemistry, physics, engineering and digital sciences.
The Institute's project-based culture gives it a very broad positioning, from knowledge production to industrial applications, in response to three societal challenges at the heart of CEA's strategy:

- Low-carbon energy
- Digital technology.

L’institut des sciences du vivant Frédéric-Joliot est l’un des neuf instituts de la Direction de la Recherche Fondamentale du CEA.
Il rassemble environ 740 hommes et femmes, chercheurs, ingénieurs, techniciens, administratifs, doctorants et post-doctorants, autour de projets scientifiques ayant pour objectif de comprendre les mécanismes du vivant, en intégrant toutes les échelles d’analyse temporelles et spatiales.
L’institut réunit des compétences qui couvrent un large spectre de disciplines, indispensable pour conduire des projets essentiellement interdisciplinaires : biologie bien sûr, mais aussi médecine, chimie, physique, ingénierie et sciences du numérique.
La culture de projet de l’institut lui confère un positionnement très large, de la production de connaissances aux applications industrielles, en réponse à trois enjeux sociétaux au cœur de la stratégie du CEA :
- la santé et la médecine du futur ;
- la transition énergétique ;
- et la transition numérique.
