About Chippin' In (CHIP BAG PROJECT)
Chippin In is a pioneering venture founded in 2020 with a powerful mission at its core: to repurpose discarded foil-lined products, such as chip bags, pet food bags, and candy wrappers, into essential resources for individuals experiencing homelessness. The heart of our operation lies in the collection and transformation of these materials into insulated sleeping bags, providing warmth and comfort during harsh weather conditions. Our approach is multifaceted, beginning with the meticulous collection of foil-lined products from diverse sources, including individuals, schools, and local businesses. These materials undergo a thorough cleaning and sanitization process to meet the highest quality standards. Skilled artisans then employ specialized techniques to craft them into durable, insulated sleeping bags. What sets Chippin In apart is our commitment to environmental sustainability and social impact. We have diverted over 2.5 million pounds of foil from landfills, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas reduction. By collecting 2.2 million pounds of PET from Michigan-based chip companies, we've prevented further pollution of our communities. Additionally, our model fosters economic empowerment and self-determination for marginalized communities, particularly the houseless and nomadic populations. Led by founder Erada Oleita, a Black, first-generation Nigerian immigrant, Chippin In embodies diversity and inclusivity. Our team comprises youth from Detroit, each with diverse and intersecting identities. We prioritize social justice-informed approaches to outreach and waste repurposing, ensuring our impact reverberates throughout our communities. We've already created jobs, with plans to expand to a team of up to 100 Detroiters leading manufacturing at our upcoming facility. This initiative will provide mentorship, a living wage of $15 an hour, and crucial support services for our workforce. Chippin In's Detroit repurposing facility, slated for completio
