Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT)

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) is a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research group and a strategic cluster of the Fond de recherche-Société et culture (FRQSC) & -Nature et technologies (FRQNT). It fosters integrated studies of music, acoustics, cognitive science, engineering, digital media, and performance sciences. As the foremost centre in Canada for research in the science and technology of music and sound, CIRMMT develops new possibilities for scientific research, as well as creation, performance and dissemination of music with a major artistic, social and economic impact. CIRMMT offers cross-disciplinary training and funding for over 200 students and postdocs, enabling collaboration across fields and preparing the next generation of highly qualified personnel. Its members are globally recognized for interdisciplinary work published in top international journals. CIRMMT also sets the bar for collaborations that bridge science and art, contributing to Québec’s cultural scene through innovative technologies in creation and performance. The Centre promotes interdisciplinary research in music, media, and technology, and supports the integration of new technologies into science and the creative arts. It provides an advanced training environment and aims to become a globally recognized hub for collaboration between artists and scientists. CIRMMT also focuses on forming partnerships with public, para-public, industrial, and commercial sectors in Quebec, across Canada, and internationally. Uniquely, CIRMMT does not impose specific research programs. Instead, it supports and nurtures interdisciplinary initiatives that arise organically from its dynamic and collaborative community.
